DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IVF AND TEST-TUBE BABY

IVF ( in vitro fertilization) is the process to conceive a test-tube baby. In IVF that is in vitro fertilization here “vitro” word means “glass” in such cases the fertilization is done in a glass vessel outside the uterus by combining a female egg with the sperm. Therefore professionals use the term IVF for test tube baby too. There is a basic procedure for a test tube baby firstly doctor checks the ovarian reserve and does all other checks. USG is done to check the condition of ovaries and other reproductive organs after discussing all the prospects the procedure starts in five steps stimulation, egg retrieval, insemination, the culture of the embryo, transfer. In India test tube baby cost is about 70,000 rupees to 1,30,000 rupees depending on the condition. A large number of children are born through artificial techniques and are leading healthy life. Such assisted reproductive technologies solve a lot of problems related to infertility which causes social stigma. Depending upon the condition the treatment expectations varies as couple needs IVF treatment when have problems like blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, reduced fertility in men and women, uterine fibroids or fear of any genetic disease. It’s difficult to assume that IVF treatment will be successful or unsuccessful for couples. In some couples first, try may be unsuccessful but the second the third try can give a good response with a healthy child. IVF procedure varies from individual to individual. To More Post: – The treatment methods for blocked fallopian tubes

The treatment methods for blocked fallopian tubes

An obstruction in the fallopian tube is a common cause of infertility in women. Around one-third case of infertility are due to such blockages. There can be various reasons for such blockages such as pelvic infection, pelvic surgery, or endometriosis.

A blockage can be present at numerous locations such as

  • It can be present at the end of the tube, where it connects to the uterus.
  • It can be present at the end of the tube, which is near to the ovary.
  • In several cases, it can be present in the entire tube.

If one has one healthy open tube, then she can be impregnated without much help. The doctor may prescribe some fertility drugs to raise the probability of ovulating on the open tube side. If both the tubes are blocked, then this option is ruled out.

Laparoscopic Surgery for Blocked Fallopian Tubes

In some cases, laparoscopic surgery can be used to treat blocked tubes or scar tissues that are the cause of the problem. But, unfortunately, this treatment does not guarantee success. The success rate of the treatment depends on factors such as the age, location and the severity of the blockage. This surgery might be helpful for those with only a few adhesions between the ovaries and the tubes. There is a 20 to 40 per cent chance of getting pregnant after this surgery if the patient’s tubes are otherwise healthy. This surgery isn’t apt for everybody. If a person has thick multiple scarring and adhesions or is diagnosed with conditions such as hydro salpinx, then one should avoid this surgery.

One should even skip this surgery if there’s an issue of male infertility. In cases of advanced maternity age or additional fertility factors, one should not undergo this surgery. In such cases, IVF is the best treatment available.

IVF for Blocked FallopianTubes

In earlier days, if the laparoscopic surgery wasn’t successful, then there wasn’t an alternative to treat blocked tubes in women who wished to get pregnant. Now with medical procedures such as IVF, it has made conception possible.

IVF treatment necessitates taking fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries. For collection more than 5 mature oocyte, through the vaginal wall the doctor extracts the eggs from the ovaries using an ultrasound-guided needle.(OPU- Oocyte Pickup) The eggs and the sperm fuse in vitro condition by collected semen sample either from the male partner or from the sperm donor (if male factor present). Thereafter, after fertilization (IVF/ICSI- intra cytoplasmic sperm injection), than development of embryos in incubator for further 3 to 5 days than healthy embryos one (blastocyst) or two embryos are transfer to the uterus.

In IVF there’s no role of the fallopian tube, thus blockages are of no concern. In researches, it is found that a swollen tube might hinder in the success of the IVF procedure. Therefore, if the patient is diagnosed with hydrosalpinx then, the doctor might suggest the removal of the tube before the IVF. Then, IVF can be carried out after the full recovery from the surgery.

Tubal Ligation Reversal

Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure for permanently averting pregnancy. There are numerous types of tubal ligation. The surgeon might cut the tubes, place specialized coils or even clamp them.

Around 20 to 30 per cent of women later regret going through tubal ligation, later in life. But the good thing is that this procedure is reversible. This surgical repair often costs less than an IVF procedure. And the success rates are usually high. The pregnancy rates are 90 per cent after 2 years of the procedure for women under 40 years. The results may vary for women above 40 years of age.

Need of Fertility counselling during IVF treatment

In-vitro Fertilization

It is the process in which fertilisation of egg and the sperm is carried outside the body in specialized laboratory. It is a type of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in which there is a need to monitor and stimulate a woman’s ovulatory process.

First ovulation induction is carried out followed by egg retrieval. Then sperm is collected from the partner or donor and fertilized with the egg in the laboratory. The resulting fertilized egg or the zygote develops into embryo within 2-6days and is further implanted in the woman’s uterus. This procedure is useful for infertile couples to carry out a successful pregnancy.

IVF may involve a lot of emotional turmoil, so couples going through the whole procedure of ART can access confidential counselling from mental health professionals.

Infertility counselling

  • A comprehensive approach towards patient’s mental well being throughout the procedure of IVF.
  • It’s a highly recommended step that patient should seek before, during and after the commencement of IVF so that they get a better understanding of the choices made by them about infertility treatment and what they actually feel about their infertility.
  • Basically it should be a must step for patients who are seeking IVF as it helps them to cope up with their emotions and feelings that range from anguish , hope, anger, despair, anxiety and isolation.
  • Couples may not feel necessary to undergo counselling as topic of mental health is still stigmatized in our country and may continue to suffer silently.
  • It is noted that women suffer more than men because they blame themselves for the infertility and hence end up with low self-esteem, guilt and depression.

Importance of IVF counselling:

  • IVF counselling is completely non judgemental and patients can freely open about their feelings to the counsellor.
  • It covers all the possibilities regarding psychological, social and legal implications of donor treatments.
  • Counselling helps partners decide about starting, changing or stopping treatments.
  • All the confusions and questions regarding the procedure are clarified.

What are the possible complications and risks?

  • It should be clear that counselling doesn’t provide answers for thesituation; instead it encourages the couples to explore options and choose the best.
  • It never interferes with couples own decisions about the situation.
  • Patients are heard out without any judgement or advice.
  • Sometimes, there is lack of free communication between the partners resulting in the negligence of some important issues faced by one of the partners. So counsellor must conduct sessions with both the partners where they are open talk to each other and all issues are addressed.
  • IVF counselling is beneficial not only for couples who have been through unsuccessful treatment, miscarriage and pregnancy loss but for successful treatment also.

How IVF counselling works?

  • It provides an empathetic environment where in both emotional and psychological support is provided to the couples dealing with the uncertainty of the procedure.
  • Counsellors are specially trained in dealing with the psychological and emotional implications of the in vitro fertilisation process.
  • Clinics of IVF provide mainly pre treatment counselling, supportive counselling and donor and surrogacy counselling.

To More Post: – Are you having difficulty to choose: IVF or IUI?

Are you having difficulty to choose: IVF or IUI?

As the cases of infertility increasing day by day, graph of awareness is also increasing in our country. Understanding the severity of infertility, couples are keen to opt for the best technique. But the most challenging part is to understand which technique is best, and with which you get the better solution of your problems. For the cases of male infertility, the easy technique to be suggested is IUI, but due to its low success rate we recommend to opt for more advanced and promising technique of IVF.Infertility causes severe mental stress to the couple and when they opt for techniques of ART, there may be chances of confusion and mistake in choosing correct centre and successful technology. Here I will discuss about IUI and IVF and try to resolve the confusion related to choosing of perfect technique for successful treatment.

Selection of test centre:

For those couple, who adopt Artificial Reproductive Technique (ART), they need to know whether the problem is in male or female partner and then the choice of centre is very important for them for the successful treatment. It should be considered that the centre must be easy to reach and you should be confident and comfortable with the doctor and staff.

Intrauterine Insemination:

It is the first to opt technique in male infertility and obscure infertility. During ovulation the best quality of sperm (separated from dead, less dynamic and poorly textured sperms) are selected and artificially injected into the uterus through a thin catheter. This method is mainly adopted for single women, female couples and men whose sperm is not fertile.

In-vitro Fertilization:

It is beneficial in both male and female. Generally, only 1 egg is formed per cycle, while in the IVF process, medicines and injections are given to enhance the production of no. of eggs in women’s ovary. This process is being monitored by different tests and scans. When the egg is formed they are removed and kept in a balanced temperature and environment in the laboratory. After this sperms are selected and the process of fertilization is performed in lab. The chance of fertilization in IVF is higher than that of IUI.  After fertilization, till the development of embryo, development process and quality is being monitored and then the foetus is implanted into the uterus of women. The success rate likely to be achieved is more than 70%.

Difference between IUI &IVF:

  • IUI is less expensive but less unsuccessful, IVF is more expensive but more effective.
  • The quality of embryo in IUI cannot be tested but in IVF it can be tested.
  • The possibility of multiple births in the IUI is more likely to endanger the health of both mother and child, IVF is less likely to have multiple births in today’s time, more likely to birth healthy offspring.
  • Frequent IUI failure causes mental, physical and economic damage, while there is less hospital visits in IVF and more successful rates.

  • IUI’s success rate is also a maximum of 20 percent at a young age, while even at a higher age in IVF, success is much higher.
  • Pregnancy after menopause is not possible in IUI treatment but can be made a mother in IVF.

For a couple fighting with the situation of infertility, the only thing matter is to get better success rate of the treatment irrespective of the sense of the technique used. For such couples I would recommend to go for the process of IVF technique. It is the best as recommended by our fertility expert.

To More Post: – Myths and Facts About effects of COVID-19 on Pregnancy.

Myths and Facts About effects of COVID-19 on Pregnancy.

Some genuine concerns about your pregnancy and the newborn baby are bound to arise if you are an expecting or aspiring mother. It is very much normal to be concerned about the ill effects of COVID on your pregnancy and the newborn after delivery. The times have been tough with the severity of COVID rising by every day. At Mohak infertility center we have taken all necessary precautions to keep all our patients and their caretakers free of any infection.

The global pandemic has brought even our daily routines to a standstill and an impending fear of infection is lurking every nook and corner of our surroundings. In these times being pregnant and the fear of infection to ourselves and also to our newborn after delivery is a big question always in our mind. New challenges and a whole new set of questions while navigating our pregnancy during this scary global pandemic are so stress full to expecting mothers. Let us get some answers to some of the myths and questions to put an end to this stressful scenario.

Is there a higher risk of being infected by COVID-19, if pregnant? As the virus is quite new to the medical fraternity there is no conclusive evidence that points towards the fact that a pregnant woman is more prone to be infected by COVID-19 than women who are not pregnant or vise versa. The fact the female body is more vulnerable to infections and other illnesses could aggravate the condition if infected by COVID-19 during pregnancy. Comorbidity during these times could increase the complication as the immunity of a woman is very low during pregnancy. It is imperative to be highly cautious if you are pregnant and be very careful to adhere to all the precautionary measures suggested by your medical consultant.

Is it possible that the fetus may also be infected by a COVID-19 positive pregnant woman?

Researchers are on to all these questions and more about COVID-19 and its effects on the fetus and some of the factors have been clarified like the lack of coronavirus found in the amniotic fluid or the breast milk of the mother. These studies have brought about some positive aspects to the ill effects of COVID-19 on pregnancy and have negated the fact that this could be transferred to the fetus by an infected mother.

Are there any special precautions to be taken for pregnant women to prevent COVID infection?

Every precaution to be taken by a normal person has to be adhered to by the pregnant woman to keep herself from being infected by a coronavirus. Along with this, she has to take more precautions as she is more prone to infections while being pregnant when she is out of her checkups and test. Select a hospital that adheres to high standards about their hygiene and sanitization of their public areas and equipment. Mohak infertility center keeps its hygiene and safety standards very high to minimize the infection to you and their staff.

Will Labour and delivery plans during COVID times?

Every hospital has its protocol during COVID and everyone is trying to minimize contact and hospitalization to reduce the chances of infection of the COVID virus to the patients. COVID test may be done before admission to the hospital. Patient restriction to the labor rooms may also be in place during this highly infectious period.

Hopefully, the aspiring and expectant mothers will be a bit less stressed out after reading the above and you will feel even more relieved and relaxed if you are being treated and consulted at a hospital like Mohak infertility center who strictly adhere to all safety and hygiene.

To More Post: –  How does PCOD affect fertility?

How does PCOD affect fertility?

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) or PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) are generally interchangeably used even though they have very minute differences. While PCOS affects the metabolism of the body as a whole PCOD affects only the ovaries. PCOD disrupts the functioning of the female reproductive system and affects the fertility of a woman. The major cause of such disruptions and disease is the imbalance of hormones occurring in a female body.

The condition should be curbed when it comes to the fore to avoid bigger complications later. This condition generally occurs in middle-aged females who become mature enough to bear children, but it might show itself in adolescence too. It is also genetic. There are certain ways of ascertaining PCOD. If these conditions or symptoms of a PCOD are visible the person should consult a good medical consultant immediately.

  • Irregular periods
  • Extreme hair fall
  • Abnormal hair growth
  • Acne
  • Skin darkening
  • Obesity

Irregular periods may be due to PCOS but PCOD is a disorder of abnormal release of sex hormones. The female reproductive system has parts like ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina, each having specific functions to perform in the reproduction cycle. The ovaries hold the immature eggs. The functioning of the ovaries is determined by the pituitary gland. The communication between the two is through the production of hormones like the FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and Luteinizing Hormone pumped into the bloodstream. These hormones mature the eggs and the follicle size increases. Simultaneously estrogen is released to release Luteinizing Hormone in the ovaries. Then the ovulation occurs with the most mature follicle releasing the egg. This is the normal process of ovulation but if you have PCOD then the pituitary gland releases an abnormal amount of Luteinizing Hormone which in turn does not allow the follicles to mature and thus it cannot ovulate. These follicles generally dissolve after ovulation but in this care may not dissolve and may form a cyst causing infertility. Another condition is when the pituitary gland secretes an abnormal amount of insulin which in turn initiates the secretion of high levels of testosterone. This imbalance in secretion prevents the ovulation process causing infertility. High hormone imbalance also leads to other problems like abnormal hair growth and acne.

Other types of disorders that can be associated with PCOD like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, endometrial cancer and the irregular period leading to obesity.

PCOD can be diagnosed and treated with the right kind of medicinal help from an expert gynecologist. If you are looking for a specialist who could help you with your PCOD condition, the best place to go is Mohak infertility center with the best team of gynecologists and embryologists who can give the appropriate solution for your condition and even cure you of your infertility issues.
